Free haircuts helping restore confidence in our local community

At Marianne’s Hair Salon in Basingstoke, we believe everyone deserves to feel confident and cared for – no matter their circumstances. That’s why we’re proud to be part of a new initiative offering free haircuts in partnership with Hart Foodbank, helping people who are going through challenging times.

Our team of professional stylists, including salon owner Marianne Rolfe, recently volunteered their time to provide this service – featured in a BBC News article. It’s a simple gesture, but one that can make a big difference.

Free haircuts

Giving back through free haircuts and haircare

For many of us, getting a haircut is part of our regular self-care routine. But for some, it can feel out of reach. That’s where Hart Foodbank’s free haircut initiative comes in – offering 30-minute appointments for clients who may be choosing between essentials like food or personal care.

Marianne and one of our senior stylists travelled to Fleet Baptist Church, where Hart Foodbank operates, to offer free haircuts as part of the new community support sessions. The response was immediate and heartfelt.

As Foodbank organiser Sue Hyland told the BBC, “Someone said they hadn’t had their hair cut for over two years.”

For us, being able to use our skills to help someone feel refreshed and valued is what community is all about.

“We love giving back”

Salon owner Marianne Rolfe shared her thoughts on why giving her time to this cause meant so much:

“We love giving back. It’s just two hours out of our lives to make someone feel a little bit happier and make them feel more confident – especially for job interviews. It’s really worthwhile doing.”

Her words capture the heart of what Marianne’s Hair Salon stands for – kindness, connection, and using our skills to lift others up.

The power of a simple haircut

What might seem like “just a trim” can have a huge emotional impact. A new style can boost confidence, help someone feel more like themselves again, or give a much-needed lift when times are tough.

The free haircuts are more than just a service – they’re a reminder that everyone deserves dignity and self-respect. It’s been inspiring to see the smiles, conversations, and renewed confidence that come from something so simple.

Working together with Hart Foodbank for good

This partnership with Hart Foodbank is just one way we aim to give back. At Marianne’s Hair Salon, we’re passionate about supporting people in our community, whether that’s through volunteering, fundraising, or helping local causes that align with our values of care, compassion, and connection.

The Foodbank offers clients free haircuts each month, rotating between Fleet, Hook, and Darby Green – and we’re honoured to continue supporting this uplifting initiative whenever we can.

We’re grateful to the team at Hart Foodbank for inviting us to be part of this meaningful project, and to everyone who helps make it possible.

Small acts of kindness make a big difference
